Podcast: Carly’s Breakthrough and the Moral Dilemma of Social Media Advertising

Entrepreneurship & Art

Dan, Carly and George share some of their favorite, or at least most watched, movies, and talk about what a Trump media company (heaven forbid) may look like. Carly breaks her creative block, George licenses his first song from RAIDAR, and Dan shares advertising tips for creatives. For the first time ever, there is an overlap in the three things too, and it’s a very well-deserved double mention.

Show Notes

Three Things

Dan

George, our quote master

  • Quoting: Janis Joplin, “To be true to myself, to be the person that was on the inside of me, and not play games. That's what I'm trying to do mostly in the whole world, is not bullshit myself and not bullshit anybody else.”
  • Quoting pt 2: A Mary Shelley character from The Last Man, a novel published in 1826 but set in 2073 in a pandemic. “Let us seek peace near the inland murmur of streams, and the gracious waving of trees, the beauteous vesture of earth, and sublime pageantry of the skies. Let us leave 'life,' that we may live,” and “There is but one solution to the intricate riddle of life; to improve ourselves, and contribute to the happiness of others.”
  • Quoting pt 3: Dave Chappelle from his SNL monologue, one of the most profound things he’s ever seen, “And I don’t hate anybody, I just hate that feeling. That’s what I fight through. That’s what I suggest you fight through. You got to find a way to live your life. Got to find a way to forgive each other. You got to find a way to find joy in your existence in spite of that feeling.”

Carly

  • Repeating: George and seconding Dave Chappelle’s SNL monologue, which has over 10 million views on YouTube but she thinks it deserves more
  • Listening: To Gimlet’s new podcast Resistance, a show about refusing to accept things as they are with stories from the front lines of the movement for Black lives, told by the generation fighting for change
  • Donating: To Atlanta’s Black Women’s Health Imperative and supporting their mission to “protect and advance the health and wellness of Black girls and women.” The Black community have been disproportionately affected by COVID and still they showed up, waited in lines for hours, and are the reason why Biden is now the president-elect. Black women are also 3-4 times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white women, have higher infant mortality rates and have a 40% higher chance of dying of breast cancer than white women. If you can’t donate money right now, please find a way to thank and support Black women, no one deserves it more
